The Vulcan ePI project is picking up steam!
On October 21, Gravitate Health and the Asia Partnership Conference of Pharmaceutical Associations (APAC) hosted a fantastic virtual event called: ePI is on FHIR around the globe. The recording is now online: 21.10.2024 | ePI on FHIR: Shaping the Future of Global Healthcare – Gravitate Health
Dr. Mohd Rabi from the Jordan FDA delivered an remarkable presentation highlighting their implementation of Vulcan’s Electronic Medicinal Product Information (ePI) in their national health app (Direct link 38.11 to 52.43). Their demo included great use of accessibility features like text to speech and manipulating the screen with face/eye recognition. The event also included fascinating presentations from the European Medicine’s Agency, Taiwan FDA, and Felleskatalogen (Norwegian drug compendia).
The Vulcan ePI team is tracking international implementations on our HL7 Confluence page here. It is important to remember that Version 1.0 of the ePI Implementation Guide was only approved July 2023, which demonstrates the incredible progress made in such a short period of time.

HL7 Vulcan Interoperability Bridge Event: Advancing Real-World Data and Clinical Research Interoperability
The Vulcan Interoperability Bridge Event (VIB), in collaboration with the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/Office of the National Coordinator (ASTP/ONC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is bringing together stakeholders from across the healthcare and research ecosystem to tackle challenges in real-world data interoperability. The project is focused on actionable strategies and collaborative solutions for improving data interoperability in clinical research, with particular attention to streamlining data flow between stakeholders such as life sciences, sponsors, government agencies, and healthcare providers who are conducting clinical research.
VIB participants are using HL7 FHIR implementation guides created by the Vulcan Accelerator, and others, to meet its goals of converging clinical care and clinical research, which align with several federal projects which will lead to a better clinical research infrastructure. More than twenty organizations are involved in the testing and planning for demonstrations that will take place virtually in early 2025. The group shared a preview of their work during the ASTP annual meeting in December.
The Vulcan Interoperability Bridge Event underscores the HL7 Vulcan Accelerator’s commitment to driving standards-based solutions that bridge clinical care and research. By fostering cross-sector collaboration and focusing on interoperability as a linchpin, HL7 and its partners continue to pave the way toward a more connected and data-driven future for healthcare and research.
